I have just returned from a two week beach holiday in Cornwall. At the risk of sounding really irritating, it was amazing.....heatwave, swimming, eating, drinking and sleeping. Week 1 we were in a beach cabin with the kids with no phone signal, week 2 we were in a beach house with parenting reinforcements aka grandparents. Needless to say we travelled down with a car packed to the heavens with clothes and then wore the same three pairs of shorts and t-shirts on rotation. I brought 8 pairs of shoes and wore one pair of flip flops. The kids were just in swimming costumes. It was too hot for clothes. Will we ever learn?! Probably not.
Hot summer days mean lazy lunchtimes and evening BBQs so it's all about easy drinking and good value wines.....
In the fridge......
2017 Château de Berne, Cuvée Or Provence Rosé
Where to buy; Waitrose £8.49
(currently on offer from £11.49)
We are apparently in the midst of a Provence Rosé shortage and I have to admit I drank a lot of this on holiday....it's perfect for both a lunchtime tipple or early evening aperitif (or just start at lunchtime and continue through until evening...). A gorgeously delicate light salmon colour, dry and refreshing with lots of ripe red berry fruits. Summer in a glass and a lovely shaped bottle! An absolute bargain too at it's current price!
On the rack......
2017 Viñalba, Reservado De La Familia Malbec, Uco Valley
Where to buy; Morrisons £9.95
If you like punchy, spicy reds with a BBQ then this one is for you! This is a Malbec from the Uco Valley in Argentina which sits at very high altitude. The altitude means it gets lovely and cool at night so the wines are fresh with lively and balanced acidity which is perfect for food. This little gem is rich and vibrant and packed with ripe black cherries and plums. The tannins are soft but noticeable and work perfectly with barbecued meat. For me, this wine is all about eating and chatting until dusk in the garden on a summer's night.
